Maureen Capillo is well known for referring to her students and their parents as “antisemitic, racist nazis” in a Sterling Montessori Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Committee Meeting. The exact transcript from the DEI Committee Meeting video below is as follows:
“I also care about creating a safe space for the global majority and I think sometimes that means doing things in a quieter way than maybe is always done. I don’t know how to do this discretely, but like so it’s like we should you know when I hear ‘Oh, you should push this out to the whole community to get feedback.’ and I’m like, “oh yeah, sure, let’s invite all the antisemitic, racist nazis to give us feedback about this thing.’ No, I mean, I’m sorry, but I…so, not to say that I would skip that step of letting the community see this work and know this work, but I would want to time that in a way that it does not slow down this work, because I am not interested in having multiple hours of discussion about this work. This work is important and needs to be done and we’re going to do it and if you want to be a part of this community and a part of this work then that’s great and if you want to agree to disagree with us and still let your kid come to school there that’s cool, um, and if you want to really strongly disagree and try to change my or our minds on things you might need to choose a different program for your child. And so, you know, anyway, I…that’s how I’m orientated and um, there are a number of things that I am quietly working on that I will quietly continue to work on with the director table, with the admin team, with the teachers, with the board, and I will do that, you know, with the folks in this committee at my back, um, and I think that when it feels ready, I will, I don’t know, I’m sorry.”
